Compelling internet coverage of global sporting events
From 1997-2000 Eric Rodenbeck served as the Art and Narrative Director of Quokka Sports, a company founded to cover the ’97-98 Whitbread Round the World yacht race. Every day for nine months, we combined competitor emails, video & GPS data into presentations designed to bring the power and excitement of this exciting and terrifying race into people's homes, in as close to real time as possible. After the race, Quokka set its sights on becoming a premiere digital sports media company, covering numerous events worldwide and eventually becoming the official presenter of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
Our work at Quokka extended what was possible on the internet and continues to inform the work of the studio: a love of data visualization and maps, a hunger for experimentation with new technologies, and an ambition to use digital technologies to tell a new kind of story.
