Interactive Narratives for a nine month global race

Yacht racing can get pretty intense.

“The sexiest part of the site, Quokka pushed the boundaries of interactivity and storytelling.”
–Molly W. Steenson, High Five Review

The 1997-98 Whitbread Round the World Race gave Quokka Sports the opportunity to produce the first 24x7 coverage of a global sporting event using the internet. The media generated by the boats in their race around the world—emails, photos, videos, position data—was used to bring sailing enthusiasts around the world closer than they had ever been able to get.

We sewed the media from the boats into a daily 9-month long compelling narrative. The presentations disregarded conventional methods and served as the foundation for Quokka’s intense data-driven storytelling techniques. This award-winning project set a new standard for interactive narrative on the internet, and was co-authored with Kirk Clyne.

9 months of great material, a designer’s dream.
